Dressage by the Letter: A Guide for the Novice

Miko (photo by Erika Wolf). Known as "Outta the Blue". He is a 6 year old 1/2 arab, 1/2 morgan (Morab).

He is 6 years old schooling 4th level. I hope to show him Prix St. Georges sometime next year. Lisa

After a long search for a dressage horse that was not huge in dollars or size. I found Miko as coming 4 year old on the internet. His breeder advertised him as a dressage prospect. I was not looking for a Morab, but had considered both Arabian and Morgan. The one quaility I was not flexible on was temperment. Miko is as bold and confident as they come.

That was 2.5 years ago. My trainer and I have taken him from a training level horse to Prix St. Georges. I have heard many times that he has moved up very quickly. The reason is simple, Miko has natural talent for dressage. He is built uphill, can rotate his pelvis very well (very important for pirouettes, piaffe and passage) and he has very good gaits. Therfore, we did not have to spend years teaching him self carriage.

Miko is only 6 years old and only 15 hands (which is perfect for me at 5'2) This little horse is proof that you dont need 16'2 to be a top notch dressage horse.

Outta the Blue (aka Miko)
Arabian Sire: Rlink to Blue (NV Shalako (Bey Shah+ x GiGi Rose (by Gamaar)) x El-Le-Gent (Garis x El Le Lou (by Gamaar))
GiGi Rose was a US National Top Ten Mare. Gamaar was a great sire, especially of broodmares. He was mainly unshown due to a severe injury (broke his leg). El-Le-Gent was a U.S. National Top Twenty Mare. Miko is Double Gamaar!

Morgan Dam: Mei Sparkle N' Gleam. 'Maggie' is by Trija Pepper Supreme (Orcland Supreme x Ruverna Penny Pepper, a Brown Pepper daughter). Orcland Supreme is VERY classic breeding. Maggie's sire, Trija Pepper Supreme, owned by Cliff & Marilyn Hitz, produces tons of sport horses for Ironstone Farm in Minnesota. Their prefix is Ironstone, and most of these horses are carriage or dressage horses, and others are hunt performance horses. Maggie's dam is a Moro Hills Moro daughter, of the well known Moro Hill breeding, making her 1/4 Lippitt. That's why Maggie's so cute & typey -- Lippitts look just like Justin Morgan. There is a story about her, with a photo, on page 30 in The Morgan Magazine this month (November '00).

There are a few Morabs in dressage, but not at Miko's level. I think there are more Morabs that could do this level. I think they would make a great little dressage horse without the expense of a German Dressage Sport Pony (who are becoming very popular)

Khosmic Wind (Khemosabi++++ x Dancing Wind (by *Bask++)) was already a champion in the world of cutting horses when Judy Urban first saw the 15 hand, 9-year-old, purebred Arabian stallion and decided to see if he would make a dressage horse. Seven years later Judy has won her U.S. Dressage Federation (USDF) silver medal riding "Mickey" and is now working toward her gold. The pair competed successfully at Intermediaire I and Urban has her eyes set on riding Grand Prix. -- A Master of Two Trades - A champion cutting horse transforms into a winning dressage horse. by Patricia Lasko
