DRESSAGE

Like other sports, the art of dressage riding involves a great amount of training for body and mind. This includes hours, month and years of ovals, circles and figure eights, with and without stirrups, working with injuries (of the rider and the horse), highs and lows, ups and downs. But, because I am also working with the mind and body of another sentient being, this kind of riding practice becomes much more than the sum of its parts. Dressage - Good Seat of Discipline by Deborah Kaetz

Classical Riding works because it has stood the the test of time. It works without fear or force and most definitely without gadgets. It's working with, never against the horse. It is opening the lines of communication between horse and rider, listening to the horse, of being very aware of how every move you make means something to the horse, of first being able to ask yourself "what did I do that made the horse do that?" when you didn't get the response you were looking for. There is nothing about "making him do it". The responsibilty lies with you, the rider, to make things comfortable for the horse. That doesn't mean you won't meet resistance or evasion or that you can't use discipline to counter them; the results are achieved through co-operation not co-ercion. - What Is Classical Riding? Cross-Train Your Horse : Simple Dressage for Every Horse, Every Sport/Book 1
"Shows how basic dressage techniques can be used to improve every horse's athleticism and performance, no matter what the rider's chosen sport. Many people think that dressage is only for expensive, highly trained horses, but Jane Savoie shows that all horses, no matter what their discipline, can benefit from basic dressage schooling, which emphasizes forwardness, straightness, rhythm, transitions, and elementary lateral work." -- Amazon review

More Cross-Training : Build a Better Athlete With Dressage
"Jane Savoie is one of the clearest writers and educators in the sport of dressage and this book advocates the advantages of dressage for every horse. This second book is slightly better suited to the dressage enthusiast than every rider. This book features excellent illustrations/photos. The text is clear and advances the training of both horse and rider in a step-by-step manner that is consistent with classical dressage training." -- Amazon review
