I go to the local auction each Wednesday afternoon, mostly as a learning experience for myself (about people and life) and for the young girl I am mentoring (about problem horses and horses in general). Today, it actually became a buying experience. There are photos attached, to show you the experience.

No sooner had we sat down, than the doors opened to let in a dunn mare that weighs 765 pounds. My heart sank. I've seen some pretty bad cases, but this was just horrid. No one was bidding at $10.00-they sell on a perhundred pound basis and I had just whispered to my friend that I might bid. The auctioneer stated "Let's try this on a per head basis........how about $10", so I raised my hand and kept it raised until we got to $50 and the other guy stopped bidding.

I had to get up and leave right after that to go and cry, which is something I've trained myself not to do so much anymore. I went to her pen to take a closer look at her (we did not arrive in time to check out any of the horses before they started) and she's got an eye infection, severe mastitis and a problem with one of her back legs. She won't let me touch her, and I didn't want to push it tonight, so I haven't gotten any farther than that. I haven't named her yet, and don't want to call her previous owner and find out her name, because I doubt I could be so much as civil to the guy. If you have a suggestion for a name for her, please let me know. She is around 15'3 (and at 765#, this would put her around 400# underweight), looks QH type, she is Dunn, with tiger striped legs. I spent a couple of hours just hanging out with her, she really wants the attention, but is *very* scared. It took about 15 minutes of holding a handful of hay into the pen (me outside the gate) for her to come up and take it. She shows no recognition of carrots :( According to the auctioneer, she is 19, but she showed me her teeth & they are very straight, still, but with a pronounced Galvain's groove. She has the brand 'VH' on her right rear thigh.

I have no real place to keep her, but the lady I board my gelding with is going to let her stay there for a while (although she's expensive and I can't afford to keep two horses at that price) and she is going to trailer her home tomorrow evening. I have a vet coming out to look at her and give me a prognosis in the morning. I fear for this little gal. I fear in general for our situation. We are already strapped to the max with one horse and a mortgage, food, and a toddler...

I also need help in general with the emotional impact of this - If you've rehabbed a horse before and might be willing to mentor me and make sure I am staying in the right direction, please get in touch with me. My neighbor has a digital camera, so I can even give updates over the internet.

If you can help (monetarily or emotionally or intellectually), please call me or write:

attachments: These are very graphic photos, please do not view if you are easily upset. 2060- face shot, shows her lovely, kind face and her bad eye (lump underneath and infected)
2062-Shows her infected teats
2069-72-73 Show her Body, which on the Hennecke chart is definitely a 1

I don't know if this is déclassé or just plain rude, but here goes anyway: I need help to come up with the money to take care of this girl, or I will not be able to rehabilitate her. I know I can call Colorado Horse Rescue or Horse Protection League and have them come up for her, but they are both 80 miles away, and I don't want to put her through that.
And the selfish part of me wants to do it myself so I can see the progress and help her find love again. So here's my sales pitch: I sell handmade soap to help supplement our income. They are $3 a bar and weigh about 3-3.5 oz each. I will make custom batches of 18-20 bars (3+ pounds) of any colour/scent combination you might like (I can even make one that smells like a clean horse!). All my soaps have a 2 week turnaround, but I will try to rush if you need holiday gifts.
If you happen to live around the Fort Collins area, I would also be happy to indenture myself out as a slave for you in exchange for grass hay, Senior feed, Vet care, farrier care, and money. I am pretty young and strong and can do barn chores quite well. I also cook and do various house chores. I am pretty desperate, can you tell?!
