Posted on Fri, Aug. 30, from a story in the Contra Costa Times The oldest sanctuary of its kind in the United States, the Wild Horse Sanctuary of Shasta County is appealing for help to save a 3,860-acre property that provides refuge for hundreds of unadoptable wild horses and burros. The land is being sold by the estate following the previous landholder's death in 1998. The sanctuary has until Dec. 31 to come up with either $126,000 to buy a small part of the property or $1.4 million to buy the entire tract. More than 200 wild horses and burros roam free on the 5,000-acre site. The sanctuary provides a place for troubled teens, disadvantaged youths and other schoolchildren to learn firsthand about wild horses and their natural environment. The sanctuary has also been a veterinary medicine research site for more than 20 years. The Wild Horse Sanctuary is a nonprofit, tax-exempt public foundation supported entirely by contributions, sponsorships and proceeds from trail rides. Donations to help save the sanctuary may be sent to: Wild Horse Sanctuary National Appeal, P.O. Box 30, Shingletown, CA 96088. www.bayarea.com/mld/cctimes/3971918.htm ******************************************************************* Don't forget, the Horsin' Around! Diablo - Dry as a bone! No water for horses! Several months ago, park ranger Dave Matthews removed the "bathtub" and rubber piping which George Cardinet put in about 40 years ago at Big Springs. For 40 years this has been the only reliable year around water source for equestrians heading up the north side of the mountain, towards the North Peak saddle and Devil's Elbow The current park supervisor, Brian Hickey, appears to be reasonable and pleasant... but now that the tub is gone, there are a myriad of problems about putting it back... specifically, the park's resource ecologist insists that the spring not be in any way disturbed. A horse trough and storage tank could be put at Prospector's Gap, which would be a perfectly adequate solution. Issues around this proposed solution are time, cost of installation and maintenance. Equestrians need to assert need for returning a viable water source to this area, so that we can ride it without anxiety even in the summer months. PLEASE contact Brian Hickey to express your concerns... phone (925) 673-2895/FAX 925-673-0160. Contact Laura Tow; (925) 672-6617 if you have any questions/comments about the above. ********************************************************************* Late Breaking News I've just learned that an Olympic Program Commission report was recently presented to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with recommendations for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Three sports and five disciplines were recommended to be excluded from the 2008 Olympics, one of those being the equestrian sport of Eventing. Reasons given were the costs for operation as well as safety of athletes and horses. After the 2000 Olympic Games, the FEI conducted a thorough study on Eventing, thereafter making changes to improve safety both of the riders and horses, as well as to lower the cost. Although the Olympic Games are still six years down the road, the IOC will be making a decision on this during a meeting in Mexico at the end of November. The USEA is trying to stop them from pulling Eventing from the 2008 Games, and your help is needed. Please send a letter or e-mail to: 525 Old Waterford Road, Leesburg, VA 20176; or to: amy@useventing.com or jo@useventing.com by October 12. Even if you aren't particularly interested in Eventing, it would be a shame for any equestrian sport to be eliminated because horsemen and women didn't support it. Please write asking them to retain Eventing in the 2008 Olympics. The full Olympic Program Commission report can be found on http://www.olympic.org. The FEI report on "The Future of Eventing" is available on http://www.horsesport.org ******************************************************************** Horsin' Around!
